The Wahlheymat Manifesto

Berlin is our home—the one we chose, our second base. We care for it deeply, perhaps even more than the place we were born into. And care is the rocket fuel of change!

We are on a mission to create a Berlin where everyone feels at home. A Berlin where respect, equality, and the freedom to be heard are fundamental rights for all, regardless of where you come from or the passport you hold.

This vision is not ours alone. The German Constitution upholds the principle: “No person shall be favored or disfavored because of sex, parentage, race, language, homeland and origin, faith or religious or political opinions.” (I./3)

With over a third of its population hailing from 190 countries, Berlin stands as a true beacon of tolerance, resilience, and diverse voices. It is a city of endless possibilities—a place where walls have fallen, systems have been dismantled, and history has been made. Our goal is to ensure the next chapter of its (hi)story mirrors the diversity and inclusivity of its community—both native and newcomer alike.

The 6 point plan to turn our vision into reality

  1. Strengthening Small Communities We embrace the vibrancy of Kiez life: strong neighborhoods, tight-knit Haus communities, and lively Sommer festivals. Our aim is to decentralize decision-making, allocate resources, and empower local communities by bringing more authority to the grassroots level. We envision a Berlin where districts (Bezirke) form a network of interconnected small communities.

  2. Activate Citizens The most effective way to organize community life is by utilizing existing institutions and giving every permanent resident—regardless of nationality—the right to vote and run for office in municipal elections. Wahlheymat will actively participate in these elections as a collective voting community to drive this change.

  3. The Language of Inclusivity While German will remain Berlin’s primary language, integrating newcomers is vital to fostering an inclusive society. We propose using English as a second language in municipal processes to ensure accessibility for all Berliners, facilitating smoother integration and communication.

  4. Direct and Digital Technology has transformed nearly every aspect of our lives. Why not harness it to transform our communities as well? We aim to create a modern, digital community engagement platform that allows residents to exercise influence beyond the traditional voting cycle, fostering ongoing participation and connection.

  5. Live Together, Lead Together Living in diverse communities can sometimes present challenges, but it also offers extraordinary opportunities for growth. We must address these challenges together, ensuring that leadership within our communities reflects the diversity of their members. The more inclusive the leadership, the stronger and more harmonious the community.

  6. Act Now Innovate, fail, adapt, and try again. Change takes time, but every small step today accelerates the transformation of tomorrow. Let’s challenge conventional thinking, rethink established systems, and question what we accept as the status quo—all while maintaining respect for others, for nature, and for ourselves.

With more than a third of Berlin’s residents originating from 190 countries, this city exemplifies tolerance, resilience, and diversity. It is a city of boundless opportunities, where history has been written, and where the next chapter must be as inclusive as its community—both native and newcomer.

While the impact of today’s actions may take time to manifest, the earlier we begin, the faster the transformation. Join us now in making Berlin a place where everyone feels truly at home.
